Which stages take place at the clinic?
Clear aligner treatment is orthodontic treatment that needs regular follow-up by a dentist. The following stages take place in person at the clinic:
- The first examination, necessary X-rays and intraoral digital scan
- Fitting the aligners and bonding attachments if needed
- Any planned interproximal reduction (IPR)
- Interim check-ups
- End-of-treatment assessment and retention
What happens at the first visit?
At the first visit your concerns are heard and your teeth, gums and bite are assessed. If needed, X-rays and photos are taken and the teeth are recorded digitally with an intraoral scanner in a few minutes. Whether clear aligners suit you and how often you would need to come for check-ups are discussed at this stage. Details are on the first orthodontic examination page.
Children and teenagers from out of town
In children and teenagers, treatment may need closer follow-up because of growth and erupting teeth. School holidays can be convenient times to plan check-ups. Treatment options by age are described on the orthodontics for children page.
How are visits planned?
Check-ups are mostly every 6–10 weeks; the interval can vary by case. For patients from out of town, appointments can be planned so that one visit covers several steps where possible. We recommend booking travel and accommodation once your appointment date is confirmed. The general framework of treatment is on the clear aligner treatment process page.
Is remote follow-up possible?
Contact by photo or message can help answer some questions, but it does not replace a clinical check-up. Aligner fit, attachments and gum health can only be assessed at an examination. That is why, before treatment starts, we assess together whether you can come to check-ups regularly.

Your aligners while travelling
