Are “clear aligners” and “Invisalign” the same thing?
Clear aligner treatment is the general name for the orthodontic method in which teeth are moved with custom-made clear aligners changed in sequence. Invisalign is one of the long-established systems using this method; other manufacturers' systems are also available in Turkey and worldwide. We explain how Invisalign works in detail on the What is Invisalign? page.
What can differ between systems?
- Digital planning software: The software used to plan tooth movements step by step and prepare the simulation varies from system to system.
- Aligner material and manufacturing: The material, thickness and edge design of the aligners can differ.
- Auxiliary features: The design of attachments, features for bite correction and solutions developed for children can vary between systems.
- Additional aligners and retention: How additional aligner sets during treatment and retainers after treatment are provided can differ.
Why the plan matters more than the brand
Whichever system is used, aligners do not produce the right result on their own; the orthodontist decides in which order, how far and in which direction the teeth will move. Correct diagnosis, a realistic treatment plan, wearing the aligners for the recommended time and regular check-ups are the most important factors in the outcome.
Aligner systems sold directly without an examination do not include this assessment and follow-up by a dentist. An orthodontic examination is needed before treatment starts to assess the gums, roots and jaw structure.
Questions you can ask at your examination
- Can my case be treated with clear aligners, and what are the limits?
- Which aligner system will be used, and why?
- What will the estimated treatment time and check-up frequency be?
- Will attachments or interproximal reduction (IPR) be needed?
- How is retention planned once treatment ends?
