The retainer does not fit fully
If you have not worn the retainer for a while, the teeth may have shifted slightly. Do not try to force the aligner into place; this can damage both the aligner and the teeth. Let the clinic know and ask for an assessment. For the wear schedule, see How long is a retainer worn?
The retainer feels tight
A slight feeling of tightness is possible in the first days after treatment ends or after a break of a few days. If it does not pass within a few days or gets worse, let the clinic know.
The retainer has cracked or broken
A cracked or broken retainer may no longer hold the teeth in the same way, and it can also create a sharp edge in the mouth. Stop using it and contact the clinic. Details: Why it matters to replace a broken retainer.
The retainer is lost
Contact the clinic without delay; teeth can shift if they are left without an appliance, especially in the first months after treatment. Details: What to do if you lose your retainer
It has changed colour or smells
Discolouration and smell are mostly caused by build-up. Review your daily cleaning routine: Retainer cleaning and care. If there are scratches, cracks or lasting stains, ask your orthodontist whether it needs replacing.
It affects speech or saliva
A slight difference in speech and increased saliva are possible in the first days; you usually get used to it within a few days. If it lasts longer, let the clinic know.
A sore in the mouth or irritated gums
If the edge of the retainer or the wire causes a sore, let the clinic know; orthodontic wax can give temporary relief.
