How long is a retainer worn?
The duration varies from person to person; the type of treatment, the starting position of the teeth and your orthodontist's assessment all play a part. A common approach is to wear the retainer all day in the first period after treatment, then switch to nights only. Because the position of teeth keeps changing slightly throughout life, many orthodontists recommend wearing the retainer at night for a long time, even indefinitely. Your orthodontist will tell you the schedule that applies to you.
What does a typical schedule look like?
| Period | General approach |
|---|---|
| End of treatment, first period | Worn all day, except for meals and cleaning |
| Following period | Wear reduced to nights on your orthodontist's advice |
| Long term | Night wear and regular check-ups |
This table is a general example; your orthodontist sets the schedule for you individually. You can add your check-up dates to your calendar with the retainer check-up tracker.
What happens if a retainer is not worn?
After treatment, teeth tend to move back towards their former positions. If the retainer is not worn regularly, this shifting can happen gradually: slight crowding of the front teeth, gaps reappearing, or the retainer no longer fitting fully are among the first signs. The amount of shifting varies from person to person.
If the retainer feels tight or does not fit
If a retainer feels tight after a few days without wearing it, the teeth may have shifted slightly. Do not try to force the aligner into place; let the clinic know. Your orthodontist will assess the situation. For details: Retainer problems and solutions.
What can be done if teeth have shifted?
If the shift is small, a new retainer may be enough; if it is more noticeable, a short course of clear aligner treatment may be planned. The assessment is made at an examination. Related post: Do teeth shift again after braces are removed?
Why are check-ups important?
The fit and wear of the retainer and the condition of a fixed wire are assessed at regular check-ups. Check-ups help to spot an appliance that has shifted or broken early.
