iTero intraoral digital scan
With conventional impressions, a tray filled with impression material is placed in the mouth and you wait for the material to set. With a digital scan, a small scanner tip is moved over the teeth and, within a few minutes, your teeth appear on the screen as a three-dimensional model.
- No impression material: For patients with a strong gag reflex, this is usually a more comfortable experience.
- You see it on screen: A three-dimensional image of your teeth appears on the screen during the scan, and your orthodontist can explain the condition of your teeth using this model.
- Digital record: The scan data is used directly to produce the aligners and makes it possible to compare progress throughout treatment.
3D treatment plan with ClinCheck
In Invisalign treatment, a three-dimensional treatment plan is prepared in the ClinCheck software, based on the digital scan and records. The plan shows the order and the stages in which the teeth will move. Your orthodontist reviews the plan, adjusts it if needed, and the aligners are produced only after it has been approved.
We can go through the plan together on screen before treatment starts. At this point we discuss the target tooth positions, where attachments will be placed and how many stages the aligner series is expected to have. The simulation is a treatment plan; because the way teeth respond to treatment varies from person to person, refinement plans may be made if needed. We describe the stages of treatment on the clear aligner treatment process page.
Digital records and X-rays
At the examination, photos of the inside of the mouth and of the face are taken, and any X-rays considered necessary for the treatment plan are requested. These records document the starting point of treatment and allow comparisons at later check-ups. You can find the steps of the examination on the orthodontic examination page.
Follow-up between visits with photos
If a problem comes up between check-up appointments, or if you are not sure whether an aligner is fitting properly, you can consult your orthodontist by sending photos via WhatsApp. This follow-up does not replace check-ups at the clinic, but it helps small questions get answered quickly and an appointment to be brought forward if necessary. We explain how to take the photos in the smile photo guide.

Frequently asked questions
Does a digital scan hurt?
During the scan, only the tip of the scanner is placed in the mouth and moved over the teeth. For most patients it is not uncomfortable; if you find it hard to keep your mouth open for long, you can take a break.
How long does the scan take?
The time depends on the number of teeth and the situation in the mouth; it is usually finished within a few minutes.
Does seeing the 3D plan mean I am starting treatment?
No. After you have seen the plan, we talk through your questions and give you time to decide. The aligners are produced only after the plan has been approved.
For questions, you can call 0312 911 60 36 or use the form on the contact page.
This page is for general information only; diagnosis and the treatment plan are determined by an examination and your orthodontist's assessment.
