Short answer: A quad helix is an appliance made of a flexible wire with four helical coils, attached to bands cemented to the upper molars. It widens the upper dental arch slowly and in a controlled way; it is mostly used in children to correct a crossbite of the back teeth and is adjusted by the orthodontist.
How does it differ from a palatal expansion screw?
- Quad helix: Expands slowly using the force of the flexible wire; parents do not need to turn a screw.
- Screw expander: Turning the screw gives faster, mainly skeletal expansion.
For the screw option, see our article on the palatal expander.
When is it preferred?
- Crossbite of the back teeth on one or both sides
- Upper molars that are rotated inwards
- A narrowed upper arch together with a thumb-sucking habit
For general information on crossbite, take a look at our page on crossbite treatment.
How is it fitted and adjusted?
- Suitable bands are selected for the upper molars.
- The appliance is pre-activated and cemented together with the bands.
- At check-ups the wire is reactivated inside or outside the mouth.
In daily life
- In the first days speech may be affected while the tongue gets used to the wire on the palate.
- Food can collect between the wire and the palate; the mouth should be rinsed with water.
- Chewing gum, toffee and hard foods can loosen the appliance.
