Short answer: The duration of orthodontic treatment is not the same for everyone; every case is different. The type and complexity of the problem, age and growth stage, how well appliances or aligners are worn, attending check-up appointments regularly and setbacks such as broken appliances all affect the duration. An estimated duration for you can only be discussed after the examination and records have been assessed, and this estimate may also change during treatment.
1. The type and complexity of the problem
Mild crowding or a small gap between teeth is not approached in the same way as a bite problem involving the position of the jaws relative to each other. How much and in which direction the teeth need to move, whether tooth extraction is needed, and whether guiding jaw growth or a surgical stage is planned directly affect the duration. You can find a general list of the problems treated on our orthodontic problems we treat page.
2. Age and growth stage
In children and adolescents, jaw growth is still continuing, so some problems can be addressed by guiding growth. In adults, bone growth is complete, so some movements are planned differently. Age alone is not an obstacle to treatment; it only shapes the plan and expectations. On this subject, take a look at our article up to what age can Invisalign be done?
3. Following wear time and instructions
For patients using clear aligners, a removable appliance or orthodontic elastics, the progress of treatment depends largely on daily wear. If the aligner is not worn for the recommended time, the teeth may not complete the planned movement and the next aligner may not fit. Not wearing elastics regularly can also slow down bite correction.

- For elastic wear: how are orthodontic elastics worn?
4. Attending check-up appointments regularly
Check-ups are the appointments at which the dentist monitors whether the teeth are moving according to plan, adjusts the wire or provides new aligners. Postponing check-ups can slow progress, especially in fixed braces treatment. We explain what can happen if you miss a check-up in our article if an orthodontic check-up appointment is missed.
5. Broken appliances and setbacks
Brackets that come off, broken wires, lost or cracked aligners and attachments that fall off can cause small pauses in treatment. A single setback does not create a major delay on its own; however, when they happen often and are reported late, they can affect the total duration. Reporting problems early reduces this effect.
6. Oral and dental health
If tooth decay, gum inflammation or a tooth needing root canal treatment is found before or during treatment, these problems may need to be addressed first. We describe the preparation stage before starting treatment on our preparing for orthodontics page. Good oral hygiene throughout treatment also helps progress continue without interruption.
Does the treatment method determine the duration?
Methods such as fixed braces, ceramic brackets or clear aligners each work in their own way; however, the main factor that determines the duration is usually not the method itself but the problem to be corrected and how well the patient follows the treatment. The method is chosen at the examination together with your dentist, according to your problem and your lifestyle.
7. Individual biological response
Not everyone's teeth respond to the same force at the same speed. Bone structure, general health and some medicines can affect the speed of tooth movement. For this reason, the duration can differ even between two cases that look similar. If you have a chronic condition or take medicines regularly, be sure to tell your dentist at the examination.
How can you contribute to the duration as a patient?
- Wear your aligners, elastics or appliance for the time and in the way your dentist recommends.
- Do not miss check-up appointments; if you need to postpone, let the clinic know early.
- Report broken, loose or lost parts without waiting.
- Take care of your oral hygiene and keep up your regular dental check-ups.
- Share your questions and any difficulties you have openly at check-ups.
Why can the duration not be stated precisely from the start?
Based on records such as the examination, photos, X-rays and an intraoral scan, the dentist can share an estimated time range. However, treatment is a living process; the plan can be updated as the teeth respond and depending on how well the patient follows instructions. For general information, see our article how long does orthodontic treatment take?, and for the stages of clear aligner treatment, see our treatment process page.
Frequently asked questions
Can I change aligners early so that treatment finishes sooner?
No. Changing aligners ahead of schedule can mean the teeth do not complete their movement and the aligner does not fit. The change interval is determined by the dentist.
Do clear aligners or fixed braces take less time?
The duration depends more on the type of problem and on following the wear instructions than on the method. Which one suits you is assessed at the examination.
What happens if treatment takes longer?
The dentist assesses the progress and updates the plan if needed; sometimes additional aligners or adjustments may be required. You can discuss your questions about this at your check-ups.
How can you find out what suits you?
The information here is general; the right plan for you is determined through an examination and the dentist's assessment. At our clinic in Oran, Çankaya, Ankara, we discuss your questions with you during the first orthodontic examination.
